SERVICE INDUSTRY

The industries within this sector can best be characterized as people and information technology intensive.  Many industries within this sector have strong growth rates, but are often highly competitive offering low gross profit margins often in the single digits, especially in the industries noted below.  Moreover, as many of the functions performed by these industries are not location dependent, they are increasingly being pushed overseas to low cost countries.    

Listed, are service industries in which the Celenium Group has substantial experience along with a few insights into major business challenges and, ultimately major information technology challenges, facing each:

• Information Technology Outsourcing Companies – This industry become one of the fastest growing global industries.  While the majority of customers are based in “developed” economies, increasingly the staff of these outsourcing companies are located in developing economies such as India, China and the Philippines.  Although there are may players in this industry, over the next 10 years there will be far fewer as the larger companies buy up the smaller companies. 

• Business Process Outsourcing Companies – Back office business processes outsourcing is gaining increasing acceptance by large corporations and has become a fast growth global industry.  Key to running these organizations is keeping costs low through use of information technology and a low cost labor force.  The later is a challenge as these companies must continually search out relocate current operations to the “lowest cost” economies to remain competitive.

• Healthcare Providers – With aging Baby Boomer generation, healthcare will remain a growth industry for at least the next 10-20 years.  Current challenges within this industry are meeting new government regulations such HIPAA, implementing systems to revolutionize the delivery of healthcare and securing the qualified professionals to staff this growth.  This industry in the nearer term future may soon be undergoing a dramatic transformation as congress and the states enact legislation to provide a form of universal healthcare to all citizens. 

• Healthcare Insurance Companies – As healthcare providers continues to grow, so will the healthcare insurance industry.  Unlike healthcare providers, the great majority of work performed is not location specific and can be performed most anywhere, consequently it is increasingly being outsourced to low cost service centers.  Since it’s future is tied to that of healthcare providers, we can also expect a dramatic transformation of this industry as congress and state governments enact legislation to provide a form of universal healthcare to all citizens.
