Many industries within this sector have better than average growth rates and gross margins. While in some industries (e.g., ERP, CAD/CAM), the industry has matured and been consolidated into a handful of major players, for other industries the market is growing in niche areas such as Sarbanes-Oxley compliance software companies, computer based games software, and dating / social networking websites.

Although there are many different vendors in this area, this area is increasingly being dominated by a small number of larger companies. While sales in several areas (e.g., CRM for large companies) has substantially fallen as customers have taken a strong look package ROIs, other areas in this areas (internet –based sales software, data mining systems) are growing at a solid pace.
- Product Development Software Companies – Includes software such as product concept software, CAD/CAM, product simulation software, and product manufacturing costing software. Although this areas has been consolidated down to a handful of major global players, there are still a number of small niche players that provide very specialized analytical tools. While the markets in the developed economies has matured, substantial growth potential exists in the developing economies. Additionally, notable growth still exists world-wide as software companies upgrade their product lines to include new mathematics algorithms and capabilities that reduce enable faster product development, reduce product manufacturing costs, and facilitate the design and development of high demand products.
- Government Application Software Companies – Includes a wide variety of software ranging from payrolls systems, to police force ticketing systems through accounting systems. Although government agencies are often strapped for cash to fund initiatives, security related and income generating systems are still growth areas. We would also expect immigration related systems to take off as the federal and state governments enact immigration reform legislation.
- Internet-Based Companies– Includes businesses that derive the majority of their revenue through selling products and services on the internet. Key to this is the design of the website, product offering and marketing methods used to reach out to the marketplace. Although the traditional “bricks and mortar” businesses have substantially increased their internet market share for products, internet-based businesses will continue to grow at a strong pace for the next several years, especially the niche players.
