TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY
Due to foreign competition, globalization of industry suppliers, and environment factors (e.g., price of oil, EPA rules, exchange rates) this industry is facing many major challenges and heading through a major transition. While it’s unclear how the markets will shake out, it’s clear that the information technology function will need to increasingly focus on the strategic areas of the business.
Listed, are transportation industries in which the Celenium Group has substantial experience along with a few insights into major business challenges and, ultimately major information technology challenges, facing each:
- OEM Automotive Companies – This sector has become one of the most globally competitive sectors. To win, players must focus dramatic improvements along many different dimensions including product innovation, long term product durability, time to market, parts sourcing, cost reduction pressure, miles per gallon and pollution controls, and quickly adjusting production capacity to meet demand.
- Tier One Automotive Suppliers – Perhaps more than any sector in Transportation, this industry is undergoing the largest change. The strategy of Tier One Automotive Suppliers appears to be product innovation, focus on high value-added parts production, selling off commoditized parts production or pushing to low cost countries, and dramatic cuts in legacy costs. With continued downward pricing pressure, several major players in this sector have reorganized under bankruptcy proceedings.
- Trucks and Components Companies – While not facing the same competitive pressures as the Automotive area, this sector faces growth challenges in the US. That is, above and beyond price increases, what new products will they offer and which new markets will they tap to grow? Legal and regulatory changes have also impacted this industries growth such as the recent changes in emissions standards.
- US Distributorships (of Foreign Vehicle Manufacturers) – In our experience, there is great variance in how distributorships operate and the resulting overhead of each. Given that distributorships generally have limited control over the products they sell, their focus is on maximizing vehicle sales and service through their dealerships. This mean making sure that dealerships are owned by highly qualified people, in the right locations, have the right sales and service staff with the right knowledge and tools, and have the right products. Although not uniformly practiced across the board, keeping overhead very low at most distributorships is key.
